Lotus Confirms Mika Salo

For immediate release 31 October 1994 Team Lotus is pleased that talented young Finn Mika Salo will drive the second Lotus Mugen Honda T109 alongside Alessandro Zanardi in the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.

Twenty seven year old Salo finished second in the 1990 British F3 Championship after a season long battle with the ultimate winner and fellow Finn Mika Hakkinen. The two Mikas were the stars of the season and completely dominated the championship, the most competitive in recent years.

Due to the lack of budget for a European F3000 Programme, Mika has been racing in the Japanese F3000 Championship since 1991.

Team Lotus Manager Peter Collins:

"Team Lotus is delighted to give Mika his first opportunity to establish himself in Grand Prix Racing.

"He made a very big impression during his 1991 British F3 season with his spirited battles with fellow Finn Hakkinen, which has provided us with an excellent measure of his untapped potential."

Team Lotus will compete in the final two races of the season with fresh confidence following the sale of the team which has ended the administration period.
