GRAND PRIX FRENCH GRAND PRIX
             CIRCUIT MAGNY COURS
                DATE SUNDAY 3 JULY 1994
      JOHNNY HERBERT 7TH
  ALESSANDRO ZANARDI DNF

Friday 1 July - First Practice & Qualifying

Johnny Herbert: 18th 1:20.108

"The car was going well this morning but there still isn't enough grip in the low-speed corners, where we're fighting for traction. I missed the best time of the session this afternoon, and then just seemed to hit a plateau of 1m 20.1s no matter what I tried."

Alessandro Zanardi: 19th 1:20.122

"We had so many little problems with the car this morning and again this afternoon which have made this day very frustrating! I have basically been going out, having one flying lap and coming straight back, so I didn't get the opportunity to have a good lap."

Peter Collins:

"We had a useful test at Snetterton last Monday which built on the running we did the previous week at Silverstone, and some of that progress translated into 11th fastest time for Johnny this morning."

Saturday 2 July - Second Practice & Qualifying

Johnny Herbert: 19th 1:18.715

"The car has a good balance again today, just the same as it did yesterday. We have tried mant things to improve the set up, but we've still got our traction problem in the slower corners. It's okay in the high-speed stuff, but the slow corners are still a real handful. The reliability is there, it's just the speed that we need."

Alessandro Zanardi: 23rd 1:19.066

"I spent a lot of time in the pits during the session because we decided to change my car to Johnny's settings. But when I went out again I was not at all happy. My car had had an oversteer problem on entry to the fast corners. It was very hard to drive it like that, and I wasn't comfortable with it. I don't know whether something else was wrong. It's strange because Johnny didn't have that same problem."

Peter Collins:

"Overall I think we have made some progress with the 109 this weekend, even if it hasn't necessarily been reflected in the lap times."

Sunday 3 July 1994 - The Race

Johnny Herbert:

"I got past Christian when he made a mistake in the hairpin and I just threw the car sideways up the inside and didn't lift off. After that I was able to catch de Cesaris. I gave it a really big push on the last lap and just threw the car over the kerbs in the chicanes. The car was consistent this afternoon, with a bit of understeer which I think most people had, but I just wasn't quick enough. The best thing for me is that I had a new set of modified boots; for the first time in a Grand Prix I didn't have a problem with the big toe on my right foot!"

Alessandro Zanardi:

"As I came to the first corner and pushed the brakes on lap 20 the pedal went completely down to the floor, so I had my first bad moment! On the straight the gearbox seemed to be doing some very funny things, which I am sure was the effect of the fire burning some of the electrical connections. I looked in my mirrors and saw lots of flames so I stopped the car as quickly as I could. This was a bit deja-vu for me, after Imola and Barcelona last year."

Peter Collins:

"It's disappointing to lose out on a championship point by such a small margin. He was quicker than de Cesaris at the end, so in race trim we have made some progress, but we've got to go quicker. We haven't yet had a chance to determine what caused Alex's fire, but the indications are some sort of oil leak."
