Friday 29 July - First Practice & Qualifying
Johnny Herbert: 21st - 1:48.621
"It hasn't been a great day for me, one way or another. I had a cracked
exhaust and a clutch seal problem in free practice this morning, and
then the engine was down on power from the start this afternoon, and
broke suddenly. The car felt a bit better for qualifying, with a little
less understeer, but I only did four timed laps all day. I feel as if
I haven't done anything."
Alessandro Zanardi: 15th - 1:47.678
"This morning I had a spin which was my own fault; I braked too late,
locked the rear wheels and went off into the gravel in the hairpin in the
stadium. At that stage the car was very difficult to drive, with the
wheels locking, but after we changed some things and I was reasonably
happy. This afternoon we made good progress, but it was a shame that a
couple of problems prevented us getting three clear runs. We were brave
and made some important changes to the set-up, which improved the car a
little but not as much as we had hoped."
Peter Collins:
"The characteristics of the Mugen-Honda engine suit this circuit, and the
car seems to be working reasonably well to the new regulations.
Alessandro put in a good performance, but Johnny had no chance to try
for a quick time."
Saturday 30 July - Second Practice & Qualifying
Johnny Herbert: 15th - 1:46.630
"We've still got more work to do on the car, though, because it's still
understeering a lot. I got going properly today after yesterday's
frustrations, but it was hard work. The bumps made the car porpoise
down the straights, and made it quite a problem under braking for the
chicanes."
Alessandro Zanardi: 19th - 1:48.225
"We did a lot of things to the set-up today but no matter what we tried
we couldn't solve the problems. Basically, since this morning, my car
has been understeering quite badly in mid-corner, and then flicking
into oversteer on the exit. We are checking everything to see if there's
a specific reason, but right now we just don't know."
Peter Collins:
"A disappointing day for Alessandro, but Johnny was able to get some
proper running after his problems yesterday. With a tough, hot race
in prospect we are looking forward to capitalising on its inherent
reliability in search for points."
Sunday 31 July - The Race
Johnny Herbert:
"I got off the line well. I passed Brundle at the start but he came up
on the inside of me to re-pass, so I decided to keep the outside line.
However, he carried on his line and I had nowhere to go. He went over
my front right as we were exiting the corner."
Alessandro Zanardi:
"I did a fantastic start and when I went to overtake the car in front
I was hit from the left - I think by de Cesaris. This is a very big
shame because we made some changes to the car after this morning's
warm-up and it was working very well on the formation laps."
Peter Collins:
"The start showed that Alex was unceremoniously driven off the road
by de Cesaris. You would have thought that after 200 Grands Prix he
would know how not to cause an accident at the start of the race.
Equally, the television shows Brundle blatantly driving Johnny off
the circuit, which I find totally unacceptable."
