GRAND PRIX SPANISH GRAND PRIX
CIRCUIT BARCELONA
DATE SUNDAY 29 MAY 1994
JOHNNY HERBERT DNF
ALESSANDRO ZANARDI 9TH - FASTEST LAP 1:30.493
Friday 27 May - First Practice & Qualifying
Johnny Herbert: 27th - 1:59.009
"I only did two out laps and in laps this afternoon, and I only had a
brief run in the new car at Silverstone earlier in the week, so I've
had no time at all to form any sort of impression about it. I would
like to thank the mechanics, who worked late into the night preparing
the 109."
Alessandro Zanardi: 22nd - 1:30.379
"I appreciate very much that the team decided to call me in after two
laps because they weren't sure about the state of the rear wing mounting
structure. I am very sorry about the circumstances in which I have come
back to a racing situation with the team, but I feel as if I am
breathing oxygen just being here even if I am in the old car!"
Peter Collins:
"In agreement with a number of other teams, we elected not to run in this
morning's free practice session, because we wanted to discuss some
pressing issues with the President of the FIA arising from the rule
changes he imposed after Monaco. It is the team's intention to approach
this meeting as a test session, to establish the integrity of the rear
wing structure, and we will review our continued participation based on
the facts available."
Saturday 28 May - Second Practice & Qualifying
Johnny Herbert: 22nd - 1:26.397
"We haven't yet got a feel for the right direction to go on setting up
the 109, because of the limited running we've done this weekend. So far
we've still got a problem getting a good balance."
Alessandro Zanardi: 23rd - 1:27.685
"The car felt okay on my first quick lap, but after that it began to
understeer more and more. I don't know; maybe something is wrong. A
damper, perhaps."
Peter Collins:
"As we said yesterday, we are treating this meeting more as a test session
because of the limited amount of mileage we were able to do with the 109
before coming to Spain. We are happy now with our rear wing mounting
structures, and we are looking forward to putting more laps on the 109 in
the race tomorrow. It's a very different animal to the 107C, and we need
more time to evaluate critical factors such as the damper, spring and
rollbar settings to optimize its performance."
Sunday 29 May - The Race
Johnny Herbert:
"After my pit stop the car felt very twitchy in the first corner, very
nervous. Then when I went into the long right-hander it just snapped
viciously out of line, and away she went. I wasn't even really pushing
that hard at that stage."
Alessandro Zanardi:
"I don't know what happened at the rear of my car, but it was just like
an active system that's gone down on to its helper springs! It had
springs, but no damping! I just had big, big oversteer all the way
through, so I just did all I could to bring it home. That was the
maximum I could do at this moment."
Peter Collins:
"The problems with Pedro's crash at Silverstone early last week really
set us back a very long way, and meant that we were very cautious when
we got here, and our attention initially was totally consumed in
making sure the cars wing structures were safe. The 109 needs very
different settings to the 107C, and was not pleasant to drive. We tried
some more new things and the car definitely went better in the race.
What we need to do is a lot more test work before Canada."
