For Immediate Release: 25 May 1994

Following Pedro Lamy's accident at Silverstone yesterday the Northampton General Hospital has issued the following information to Team Lotus.

Morris McLain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in charge of Trauma and Orthopaedics, summarized the post accident care to senior Team Lotus officials as follows:

The speed and efficiency of the first aid measures provided by Silverstone Circuits and the transfer to hospital could not have been better.

Pedro suffered very severe fracture and dislocation of both knees, the left being worse than the right, with the lower end of his femur broken at the knee.

He has a modestly severe injury to his right wrist, with a fracture to the scaphoid, the small bone in the wrist on which the thumb swivels. He received a minor bump on his head and he also has various bruises as would be expected.

A successful preliminary operation was carried out on Tuesday afternoon but further operations will be required, the first of these to his right knee this coming Saturday.

His general condition is stable, he is in good spirits and is talking to his mother, father and sister who have arrived from Portugal.

It is likely that he will be transferred to Portugal next week and his age, fitness and good attitude will speed his recuperation.
