Zanardi Deputises For Injured Lamy

For immediate release: Thursday 26 May 1994

Pedro Lamy is in a stable condition in Northampton General Hospital following an accident at Silverstone Circuit on Tuesday driving the Type 107C in Barcelona race trim.

The car swerved off the track at a point mid-way between Abbey Curve and Bridge Bend, and hit the safety wall and debris fencing. Pedro was removed from the car when it came to rest, and was immediately airlifted to Northampton General Hospital. His injuries were diagnosed as fractured and dislocated knees, involving the lower end of the femur in both cases, moderately severe injury to the right wrist with fracture of the scaphoid, and a very minor bump on the head. Pedro immediately underwent a successful preliminary operation, and further reconstructive surgery to his knees is planned during the weekend. Pedro's mother, father, sister and Manager, Domingo Piedade, are with him at the hospital. It is likely that Pedro will be able to return home early next week.

This weekend Johnny Herbert will be driving the new Lotus Type 109 and Alessandro Zanardi will deputise for the injured Pedro Lamy, in a Type 107C.

The Type 109 Lotus Mugen-Honda is a new car, only incorporating the well proven semi-automatic gearbox of the Type 107C. It has been designed to incorporate the current ZA5-C and the subsequent ZA5-D Mugen-Honda engine when available.
